Creating Leather Jewelry
The leather jewelry I create is cut by my husband Blake Wilson on a laser cutting machine. I began hand cutting leather in my studio, but I wasn't able to produce the clean lines I wanted. So, I began to looking for another way to cut my designs. After much experimentation, I found that the laser cut leather produced the look I was trying to achieve. I begin the process the same way I always do, by creating a sketch on paper. Once I am happy with the sketch I then recreate the sketch in a computer program that the laser cutter can read. Blake and I have spent many, many hours experimenting with the laser cutter to create this leather jewelry collection.
How does laser cutting work? The laser cutter uses a focused and precise beam of light to cut through the leather and essentially vaporizes the material that is to be removed. The laser works it's way across the leather only cutting out those pieces of material it is directed to by the computer drawing. Once the cutting process is complete the leather jewelry requires some finishing and very careful cleaning by hand.
