Return of the Sun Legend
My new Niobium collection “Return of the Sun”, is inspired by a Haida legend that explains the change of seasons. By stealing a large ball of light from Grandfather, Raven created the sun, the moon and the stars. The only creature that did not rejoice in having the sun was bear. When Raven created bear he made his fur coat twice as thick as other animals. Instead of enjoying the warmth of the sun, bear roared at the sun for making him so hot and uncomfortable. So, Bear decided to wrench the sun out of the sky and hide it away in a cave. Bear plunged the world back into cold and rainy darkness. The people and the animals were miserable without the sun. With the help of his grandmother a brave boy devises a plan to have bear return the sun to the sky. The young boy is given a supernatural salmon skin by his grandmother. When you put the salmon skin on you transform into a salmon. The young boy disguises himself as a salmon and waits in the river until the bear is full of fish and then gets captured by bear who takes him back to his cave to eat later. Bear was so full of fish he fell asleep quickly. The young boy removes his salmon skin and takes a clam shell and shaves all the fur off of bear while he was sleeping. When bear awoke he was so cold without his thick layer of fur, that he too wanted the sun to return, so releases the sun back into the sky.
